rippled surface (by maurits cornelis escher)


m. c. escher (dutch illustrator) first caught my attention in the '70s. he is one of my favorite artists & his usuage of mathematics to create, is astounding!

Can you explain the mathematical properties of this illustration?

geometry, spacial symmetry (17 plane symmetry groups), distortion, etc.. to achieve reflection.
