Last week I had some pretty good neck/back pain. Not totally sure why, but nonetheless it was there. I had to take a couple of days off of training and had to baby the neck quite a bit. Special thanks to Mindy and the girls for looking after me.
What was interesting was that it hit during the immediate days leading up to my 18 miler. A few times, I thought that I would just skip my long run. Then another thought came and was backed up by Mindy mentioning the same thought. Here it is: maybe the long run would help my back/neck and get it back into place by relaxing the muscles and realigning the spine.
Initially the thought seemed counter-intuitive/illogical. Who in their right mind would go and run for almost 4 hours when their neck and back have had them laying in bed? Well, crazy as it may seem, I went for it Friday morning at 6:30. During my run, I didn't feel any spine pain and felt great. After the run and up until now, I don't have any neck/back pain whatsoever.
In a unique kind of way, I had my spine adjusted by an 18 mile run. I'm not recommending that you do the same thing. I'm just sharing how cool it was to find a solution/healing/blessing in the last place you'd think you'd find it.

...so true...best benefit of running is for the back IMHO...the fact that it straightened out your joint/bone problems is directly related to good running form...
I wish I could do the same for my hip. Doc says I got the flat foot. So I got some inserts for my shoes months ago and my hip is still messed up. Sometimes running helps, sometimes it makes it worse. Of course, I probably have pretty bad running form.
