Went running in Cold Springs on Saturday morning. Brent had mapped out a run for us that would amount to 14 miles. At about 4.5 miles, Katy and I decided we'd "wing it" and go up into the hills. Katy had a GPS watch thingy, so we could approximate a turn-around point and run back to Brent's house. After doing some quick figuring in our heads, we decided at 10 miles, we'd turn around (approximately the 2 hour mark). With that small calculation, we figured it would take an hour back, which would put us at about 3 hours give or take for 15 miles.
Running on the trails was a great workout. The dirt was pretty soft with minimal rockage. We had discovered runner's paradise. You could run for days on nice trails with fairly high altitude that went up and down. At about a quarter into the run, we experienced some pretty serious hillage. From miles 7 - 9, I struggled quite a bit with the hills and lack of oxygen. I'm used to running at about 4,000 feet. My lungs guessed that the Cold Springs hills were at about 5,500 feet. So, I couldn't breathe like normal and my thighs were burning pretty good. I love hard workouts like that. I didn't realize how dusty the run had been until I took off my shoes and socks coming into the house and my legs looked brown and like I had white socks on.
At about mile 7/8, I told Katy to go ahead and let loose. She had been running with me up to this point, but I knew she was holding back. She took off like a gazelle and we ran the next 7/8 miles individually. We both had cells just in case we had an injury or got lost. Thank God for shoe marks on the paths. They helped both of us get back on the same route. (There were a lot of crossing/intersecting trails). Katy is an unbelievable distance runner. She runs effortlessly and graciously, plus she's fun to talk with on the run if you can keep up. :>)
Katy and I are tentatively scheduled to run 18 miles on August 19th/20th. Hopefully, our schedules will permit. If you're interested in running it or biking it with us- let me know. It's always nice to have company.

Sure... I'll run with you...
NOT!
I'm shooting for 7 tomorrow and that will be stretching it (I've never run 7 before, so we'll see what happens...)
I think that you should have a race base upon the prison break movie "The Defiant Ones." Teams of two should be shackled to each other and the team with the best time . . . doesn't get shot. Maybe the airsoft pellet gun small group could participate with you. Maybe they could learn to train bloodhounds, too.
I'm here to help if you have any questions.
Good job, Jeni, on the 7!
Davido- Pretty creative thoughts on this one. I laughed all the way through your comment. With that being said, you've totally missed that we could make it a sort of gaunlet event. Where there'd be guys with bats and other weapons placed along the running route and runners would have to get through them to survive. Just an idea. Or another idea would be for you to join me on the long runs and you could ride your bike alongside me cheering me on with words of encouragement. I think that's the best idea by far.
Or . . . you could pull me on a rickshaw while I command you where to take me. Commands are the same as encouraging words, right?
