temple time

1 Corinthians 6:19
19Or don't you know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, ....

TEMPLE
So many markings on the outside
What do they all mean?

Half of them seem to make no sense
Just black & distorted

Like a church w/ graffiti
A temple meant for beauty- is now marked ugly

Lord, I’m sorry for dishonoring you
I look forward to making a change

A time comes for the graffiti to be covered up
A time of new beginnings & fresh beauty

Let’s throw a plethora of colors on the temple
Let’s arrange the colors in glorifying unity

A fresh start
Let’s paint the walls

Lord, I dedicate all this to You
New colors, new paintings, new focus

May I bless You w/ my temple
May it be a sweet sight unto Your eyes

Thanks for the liberty to express
Let the new colors flow!

like bd points out, the Bible says little about tatoos in our culture. it's along the lines of eating pork, drinking alcohol, shaving, and letting women cut their hair short and speak aloud in church.

everything is lawful, not everything is beneficial. it's much a function of the current zeitgeist of the society in which you find yourself. i feel no need to decorate my body (or endure the pain that is necessary), but i don't feel i have been appointed judge over those who do.

perhaps a little excercise (say a walk in the morning with family) is a better way to honor one's temple than sit in front of the computer all day and bag on people who like tatoos.

Wow... Jaybird, I have to say that I liked your post very much and I second your statement!

Cool poem, Jay. I've been considering getting my first tattoo for a long time. Now I want to more than ever.

From past negative experience, I really try to stay out of the theological pontifications on these blogs, but I have to say this. James 2:10 is clear that if you want to follow the law and you violate even one part of it, you are guilty of violating the entire law. Distinctions don't matter. Thank God for the New Covenant of Grace that fulfills the law by making us (those who believe by faith) righteous through Christ's ultimate sacrifice.

James goes on to say that judgment awaits those who don't show others mercy. This sobering thought should disturb us far more than whether anyone is getting tattoos.

although i like tim's sentiment and agree with it, i will split hairs (literally) for a moment. you can easily equate personal hygeine w/ blood-letting and scarification (is that a word?) of skin. how? because they are all addressed in the same section of the law. to take one section of scripture you like to start a fight and then disregard the rest of that section because you "doubt it is in the same playing field". try reading the Bible in context and spend less time blogging.

the key to the indentity of thorn/butterfly is to look for the blogs on which there are no negative comments posted about the author.

I watched a show about tattoos the other day. It was the history & the pain. I wondered how much pain one would have to endure to be scarified & after watching the show it seemed to be fairly intense. I have still yet to pull the trigger on one.

JayBird said...

murdoc- did you see that on the discovery or history channel? have you seen miami ink, yet?

there's a type of scarification that includes the following procedure: blades are used to "carve" out the picture/immage onto the skin, then ink is poured into the wounds to make the tatt. i think regular tatts are painful enough. i might have to wuss out on the scarification method.

on another note- have you seen any of the piercings shows? have you seen the art of "suspension" using large fishing hooks? ouchy!!!

it was the discovery channel. No thanks to the cutting or hanging.

I haven't seen any piercing shows...but I have seen a few piercing looks. Like when I asked Mindy where her "better half" was this morning.
