Hey! (The Infection of Coolness)

I have spent most of my life trying to be cool; however, "cool" is an unobtainable entity. Being cool is subjective at best and much of it depends on what others think. For me, I've tried labels like: jock, skater, punker, cowboy, professional, pastor, and so on.

I've gotten tattoos, grown side-burns, pierced my ears, worn mo-hawks, colored my mo-hawks, worn outlandish clothing, etc....

I have talked certain ways, liked certain things, drank certain beverages, bought certain cars, played certain sports, obtained certain accomplishments/certificates/degrees, etc....

In all of these attempts to be "cool"/accepted/relevant/respected/attractive, I only found an obsession with trying to fit in. There's something about us Gen-Xers that needs to be totally "cool." Will we stop at nothing in being approved by others we find "cool?"

I believe this "coolness" issue only distracts us from our need to understand who God has made us to be. God has already made me cool. So cool-- that He died for me. That's the only identification that I need. I'm a bit concerned sometimes at the attention we pay to being liked through how we look or act.

Ultimate "coolness" is being who we were made to be. Whether someone finds that "cool" or not is of NO consequence.

Be you. Don't be a poser.

Jason

I obviously make no attempts to be cool. In fact last week one of my co-workers told me that I was the nerdiest person he knows. Maybe I can be cool in my nerdiness... he he he...

being able to be content with who you are and realizing your own special unique qualities that are good enough is truly a gift from God.

I'm still trying to be cool, but my idea of cool has really changed over the past few years. Cool now is raising my son well and making my wife happy. I like the idea of being good at my job and making the world a better place. Really cool is getting a little better in all areas of my life every day.

All that image stuff is still a trap I fall into, but I work to define myself by more substantial measures.

Good to see you're still out there Jason. I hope you and your family have a great year.
