I've been having to run in the morning again, due to work stuff. I hit the road at around 6 and run until 7. The weather has been a bit interesting, as it's in single digits at around that time of the morning (coldest right before sun-up). I have been experimenting with my clothing, so I won't get frost-bite and also won't dehydrate sweating-- it can be a fine line sometimes. In the 6-8 degrees that I run in, I wear:
- Shoes (always a good start)
- Padded socks
- 2-3 layers on bottom half (underwear are a layer-- we don't want frost-bite in this region) :>)
- 3 layers on top half
- Gloves
- Skull-cap/beanie/whatever
- I'm considering a cap that includes full-facial coverage, since my nose and cheeks started burning this morning.
Interesting note: When I get back from running in very cold weather, I notice something-- no, not that-- I notice my "more fatty" areas (front belly and handle-bars) are bright, bright red. My hypothesis is that skin over fat areas is more susceptible to frost-bite. In addition, I think that fat freezes quicker than muscle. Anyway..... I've heard it said that:
There's no such thing as bad weather...... just bad clothing!!!

Jason

...be advised..."flushed skin" is one of the warning signs for dehydration...i've noticed that my knees and chest (areas that don't get a lot of friction) are usually very red for hours after a marathon...pay close attention...especially in the cold (with all the layers you're wearing)...
Pretty much any clothing I use to run in is bad clothing, but for an entirely different reason...
