coaching from the sidelines

nanna's soccer coaches (a married couple) have been distant to say the least. they don't really know the girls and they don't know the parents at all. being around them there's an obvious wall they put up and their coaching style feels like a clinic you go to during the summer as a kid: this is the program, here are some moves, don't talk or make noise, and don't ask questions-- it's bothersome.

the wind-chill was painful last night at nanna's 2nd soccer playoff game. since her coaches give no direction during the game (ever), i have been helping from the sidelines. last night, i really got involved and it helped me keep somewhat warm. it's one thing to be an overbearing parent that yells at your kid or team in a negative way and it's another to actually give guidance and remind the players of how to play. the girls were cold, tired, and standing around. i gave them a little boost with my vocal cords and they responded well. i don't claim to be a soccer expert or think my way is the best. i do appreciate a coach that values each individual child and continues to equip/provide guidance to the players each and every time they meet.

the game was tied, 0-0, and they will move on for another game. nanna got a ball to the gut and it took her a bit to shake it off. her sisters quit soccer for this very reason: they don't like the contact with other players and don't like getting hit with the ball. i wonder if nanna will stick with it. she probably will- she loves the sport.

I like soccer. I remember the proverbial parent (usually a loud mother) who would always scream "JUST BOOT IT" whenever her childs team had the ball. Funny stuff. Having your child on a team without a coach (which it sounds like you just have bodies instead of coaches) isn't very fun at all. That alone can turn one away from the game. Hopefully, if she sticks with it, she will find a coach that really helps her enjoy the game and learn.

Maybe you should do it :)

I think she will stick with it-- Nanna'a tough cookie. Contact with other players and getting hit with the ball is part of what makes soccer fun-- especially if you're smaller than the other players-- the bigger players don't expect the smaller players to hit as hard as they do. Someday if and when I have my own kid(s) I will probably coach a team-- I miss soccer... :)

I think it's your cologne . . . You need to switch from Old Spice to Pele's Pungent Perfume . . .
