tattoos/piercings in the workplace

My first tatts/piercings were in my teen years. As a student (not a very good one), & part-time working dude- my "self expression" was, for the most part, uninhibited. Of course there'd be the occasional critical/degrading/condescending look from the "normal" people. The "normal" people didn't much like my hair styles, the leather, or the spikes, either. I liked it a lot. I didn't express myself in this way to simply be rebellious. Though my expression was a great avenue to be rebellious when I wanted to be difficult. :-)

Most of us, find ourselves in some sort of "profession" & "self expression" will be a factor. For some this factor is a non-issue & others this factor will need definite consideration. There are different levels of consideration of this factor- dependent upon our profession & how much we'd like to express ourselves. Quite frankly, I really don't care what people think of how I express myself; however, there are factors to be considered- unfortunately.

I'd like to throw out a few questions: What do you think of what's been written above? What's your opinion & experience on this subject?

It really does depend on different work environment.

When your trying to get hired anywhere - excluding tattoo and piercing parlors - you're going to want to look clean shaven and have a general lack of ink and/or holes visible to the potential employer. Unfortunately, it seems pretty universal that these sort of things instantly mark a person as a possible hazard to self or company and in most cases it would most likely be best to reveal your personal body art after your employer has your trust.

These kinds of thoughts may disappear a little more as my generation takes over the world. This could be possible because most of us have probably had some kind of experience with a tattoo/piercing, either first-hand or a relation, and most likely don't have the same extreme stereotyped outlook on people choices.

I believe as the world becomes older, each generation will phase out some of the good and some of the bad "morals" of past generations. Point in case: it was moral in America to own a slave 200 years ago...today, not so moral. In fact, some American's fight for the freedom from slavery every day.

An interesting question...thanks for that...

not having any tattoos and having no visible piercings at any point in my life - it has obviously not affected me. but speaking as one who used to hire, piercings and tattoos (like completely covered arms type of tattoos) did make a difference in jobs where the applicant needed to deal extensively with the public. does that make me a bad person?

i wasn't talking to you, ink-boy

I'm sucha loser - I've never had any tattoo's and I've only had accidental peircings, but I never left the blunt object in there.

no worries, frad-ster. tatts & piercings can be risky business. when you consider health risks like: hepatitus, aids, infection, etc... it's something to be cautiously considered. One must consider a few things: sanitation- needles, ink, ink wells, blood-spatter on gun/equipment, gloves, etc... after that's all considered, then you have to ask yourself (again), do i really wanna express myself in this way?
